EGG Since 2005
My date of birth is 4th October 1948. I was born in Scotland to Scottish parents but , owing to the closure of the shipyards, in 1950 my father brought us all to Johannesburg where he had found work as a boiler maker . I didn’t return to the U.K. until 1967 when I was 19 .
I had £50 in my pocket . I began my next few decades in Birmingham working in printing and as a waiter until I moved to Colchester with my wife and children . I started my own printing company in 1976 in a garden shed. It soon grew to 40 employees and , luckily for me , it weathered the ups and downs of , at least , two recessions before I closed the print factory and retired leaving my son to continue with the name, sales and design studio.
Both Nicky and I agree that our move to living in Knysna for six months a year was the best decision we ever made . We love the people and the country . For me the absolutely best thing that’s happened to me has got to be meeting all the guys in the Eggs ! There are so many good times that it’s hard to mention a few specifically but , nothing can beat, after the game drowning our sorrows with laughter and chirping
ROD WHYTE
EGG Since 2010
I was born on 30 May 1944 in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia. I attended Baines Junior School and Northlea High School and then proceeded to Leeds University in the UK , courtesy of Anglo American, graduating in Chemical Engineering in 1967. Whilst there I met Kathy and being suitably entranced proposed to her and we were married in the UK in 1968 and together returned to Kitwe, Zambia where I took up a job as a metallurgist with Anglo.
My introduction to the EGGS more or less coincided with my introduction to the game of golf and occurred about 2010. We had bought a house in Belvidere and I knew Bob Keen from cricketing days on the Copperbelt. At a Sunday lunch In conversation with Peter Marais and Bob I was encouraged to have a game with the Monday school . Thus began my fortunate association with the EGGS.
I had a 40 year technical career association with Anglo American which sounds horribly boring but was anything but so. The first 11 years were spent on the Copperbelt in production and project activities and the remainder of the time based in Johannesburg was spent on Anglo projects in SA and many locations around the mining world.
I count myself exceedingly fortunate to have been accepted as an ‘itinerant’ EGG. The camaraderie is exceptional and on occasions the golf can be as well. Best wishes for the ongoing health of the EGGS!

EGG Since 1995
Born 1943 and educated at Churchill School in Salisbury ( Harare ). Lived and worked in Rhodesia, Zambia and Malawi for Shell. Returned back to Zimbabwe and joined an American group Universal Leaf who were involved in the processing and marketing of raw tobacco, subsequently transferred to Belgium in 1974 and UK in 1986. Retired in 1994 and emigrated to SA, having we bought in Belvidere a year previously. Joined EGGS in 1995.
EGGS was a bit daunting in those days, predominantly older generation of high fliers and war heroes. New recruits were looked upon as you upstarts and protocol and etiquette was very much the order of the day. Long socks ( golf hose ) was mandatory. Our contribution to the kitty was the princely sum of R2.00 in those days……
Some wonderful ‘old school” characters, many of whom had fought in the World War II – John Edmonds ( a retired Jeweller from Rhodesa) Gordon Dunningham ( CEO of Barlow Group), Dick Bird ( an amazing raconteur ) Glynn Hobbs, Mike Robinson, a retired tea planter from Ceylon and a scratch golfer, Lionel Hewitt, Jeff Kenyon ( another wonderful raconteur who recently passed away ), Bob Kershaw ( highly decorated RAF pilot), Keith Hobson, Keith Fraser, Arnold "my 1 to 9 wood” Jubber, Peter Ogden. Peter, well into his 80’s was a wonderful character and was the source of much amusement particularly when an attractive member of the opposite sex walked past.

Joined EGGS in 2021 and loving it. Born in Germiston and grew up on the Goldfields in Carletonville. Spent most of my career in the Witbank/Pretoria area. I semi-grated from Pretoria in 2021 and I am now trying to retire here in Knysna. I continue to work part-time as a financial planner specialising in investment planning and involved with the administration of deceased estates.
I am told that to qualify as a golf fanatic you must have given up playing golf permanently at least 5 times. I qualify! I started playing again in 2021 after a break of 10 years and I am loving the fresh experience. I feel very welcome in the EGGS group, and I look forward to many happy years with this friendly group of gents.

One of the best memories :- playing with Bob Keen at George golf club Hole 11 Par 5 500 metres. Two good drives ; both seconds on the green ; both sunk the puts for eagles – what a moment to share!
It has been a privilege to be a member of such a friendly and caring group of people, and one of the highlights of living in Knysna and I wish to thank them all. May the group go from strength to strength.

Eggs experiences: Sadly, nothing springs to mind that bears repeating other than poor golf over many
years, but what I have enjoyed more than anything else is the camaraderie and friendships of all the
Eggs’ players. We are an incredibly happy group and long may it last under Bob Keen’s excellent
organisational skills and ever present humour.

The EGGS is a wonderfully social group of golfers but also compete seriously for victory each Monday. We have plenty of laughs both on the course and off.
The funniest incident I can recall was when we had the temporary Club House on the old 1st hole after the fire. A golfer whose name I will withhold pulled his second at the 18th so badly it went through the door of the Clubhouse and ended up in the bar. Have you ever tried to play a golf shot from a beer tankard!!

Being “allowed” or invited to join the EGGS was one of the best things that happened since we started our regular long stays in Knysna. A great group of like minded people with shared sense of humour and love of golf at an appropriate level. I only wish I could play better than I do but at least it gives me something to aspire to!
